What happens at a VA C&P exam

The Compensation and Pension exam is not treatment. The examiner is not your doctor and is not there to make you feel better. They are gathering evidence, completing a Disability Benefits Questionnaire, and writing down what you say and what they observe. The rater works from your whole file, but that report is usually the heaviest single piece of it.

A service connection claim has to establish three things: a current disability, an in-service event or injury, and a medical link between them. The exam tests the first one. You can have a solid service record and a clear nexus and still lose on element one in that room, which is exactly how four of my claims were denied on the same line: the examiner indicated I did not have and never had the condition.

The mistake almost everyone makes is answering how they feel today instead of how the condition affects them across weeks and months. Rating criteria account for flare-ups and for functional loss from pain, weakness, and fatigue, but only if it makes it into the report. Give a frequency and name one specific thing you cannot do. Do not exaggerate either, because examiners do this all day and losing credibility costs you the true parts too.
